multi talented momma- Interview with Tara founder of MedBasics

MedBasics.com

1) Tara, you are good friends with Heather, Blessed Nest's founder and designer. How did you come to know each other?

Heather and I met on a photo shoot in New York City. I was doing an editorial modeling job and she was the stylist for that shoot. Fortunately for me, Heather and I had a lot of time to talk and get to know one another that day. She told me all about Blessed Nest and I shared with her our then very early vision for MEDBASICS. I love how life works that way. People come into your life in the most random ways on days when you’re not expecting it. The next thing you know, 2 or 3 years have gone by and you realize that you’ve made an amazing friend (actually 2 friends because she introduced me to Isabelle too!) and think to yourself how different your life would look if that hadn’t happened.

2)You are a multi talented Momma...Heather has told me a little about the amazing careers you have pursued. What all have you accomplished in the career arena?

It’s so weird to hear it put like that… amazing careers. I guess for me it’s always been about pursuing what’s interesting to me, what’s meaningful to me and what pushes me beyond my comfort level as a person. I knew from the time I was 4 or 5 years old that I wanted to be a mom and a nurse. Actually to hear my own mother tell the story I either wanted to be a nurse or a maid. Little did I know that some day I would indeed be both as a stay at home mom! Anyway, as a nurse I loved cardiology and the emergency department. The educational aspects of nursing really won my heart though. Helping patients understand their diseases, their medications and why different things were happening during their hospital stay was the most satisfying part of nursing for me. The feeling that comes with knowing that someone else feels calmer simply because of knowledge shared… I love that.

After our son Nicholas was born I decided not to go back to work full time and at that point I suppose I kind of transferred my love for teaching from nursing to parenting. While I was home with Nicholas, my husband Luke and I started our company MEDBASICS. This provided yet another opportunity for me to share medical knowledge with people in a meaningful way.

After Nicholas started kindergarten I knew that I wasn’t quite ready to have a second baby and MEDBASICS was still in its infant form, so when a friend suggested I try commercial print modeling I actually listened to her. I found an agent and started going on castings for print ads and TV commercials. I should clarify here, when I talk about my modeling, you should think pampers ads and fabric softener bottles, definitely not runways and bathing suits! It’s like real people modeling. Okay so this is where the pushing myself beyond my comfort level comes in. There is something very terrifying and freeing about the vulnerability of modeling. I can’t tell you the number of times I walked out of an audition feeling absolutely ridiculous. You don’t have to do that too many times before a kind of self-accepting resolve kicks in. That is a personal lesson I needed to learn.

I’m currently staying home with our second baby, Oliver who just turned one last month. Yummy! My days are filled with MEDBASICS, spending time with my friends and family and doing the very occasional modeling job.

Tara we are so excited for you and Luke. Both you and your company are amazing!

I just have to add my two cents here... I have been right there with Tara and Luke (and Oliver and Nicholas) through most of the process of starting this company, and I have to say that it is the most amazing labor of love. It's not a book. It is a rare gift that will empower caregivers to be a hero to their children and will undoubtedly save lives.
