The birth of MedBasics~~ A labor of Love & A Giveaway

Tara and Luke have generously donated a Travel Pack by MedBasics for our September giveaway~ Read below for details.

Note from Heather, founder of Blessed Nest:

" I have been right there with Tara and Luke (and Oliver and Nicholas) through most of the process of starting this company, and I have to say that it is the most amazing labor of love. It's not a book. It is a rare gift that will empower caregivers to be a hero to their children and will undoubtedly save lives."

~~ You and Luke have a business called MedBasics.

Tell us a little bit about Med Basics and what inspired you to start your business?

When our son Nicholas was a baby he choked one afternoon during lunch. Fortunately I knew what to do mostly because of my training as a nurse. After that day I kept thinking to myself, “I can not believe that actually happened” and then, “What if he was with a babysitter, or my parents? Would they have known what to do?” Later that week I made a little booklet of first aid information to leave with my babysitters. Friends and family members saw the booklet and asked for their own copies. Luke and I never really planned to start a company but pretty quickly we recognized a need and knew that we had a better way to do things. His experience as an emergency medicine physician and my nursing background provided the medical knowledge required to create MEDBASICS. Equally important was our joint experience as parents and our ability to know and understand the fears that come with that.

Over time that little booklet has evolved into an amazing line of products, each of which are defined by two simple ideas. First, we want parents and caregivers to always know where to find their first aid information regardless of where they are. Second, we want them to be able to understand what to do and how to do it once they have the information in hand.

These two ideas are the filter for which we passed every design idea. Some of the features I love are the color-coded tabs that allow parents to identify each medical emergency quickly. Once they turn to the section they need, they’ll find easy to understand instructions with simple illustrations to walk them through what to do and how to do it. Both the home and travel packs come in a super hip nylon fabric wrap (available in 4 different colors). The home pack wrap is designed to hang over a doorknob or hook anywhere in the house, whatever makes sense to the parent… the baby’s room, the kitchen or next to their first aid kit. The travel pack is designed to attach to any stroller, diaper bag, backpack or portable crib. We suggest parents keep a copy of the travel pack in their car and definitely take it with them on trips, hence the name travel pack.

I think because Luke and I are parents we really do understand how anxiety producing these topics can be. It’s scary to think about. It’s intimidating. It’s hard to remember exactly what to do even if you’ve taken a CPR/first aid class!

But honestly, if the situation comes up, parents and caregivers need to know what to do. And that is why we created MEDBASICS.

I love the first photo to start with. What a cutie pie. And I also love that with the kits there is a checklist of what to do in an emergency since I am so all about checklists. I love that they come in pink. Beautiful site and genius product! Thanks for showing us this Donna and Heather!

The FAQ site is great. It provides great answers to questions I had and has confirmed that I probably should have one of these.

I also like that there is a place to store important info inside of the pack.

The fact that it has a clip is perfect. My diaper bag is such a mess and it would take far too long to find in an actual emergency.

I think the Home Pack is a great idea. I have 3 kids and often have the grandma's here to take care of one or more of them as we trot off to a football game or school activity. I know they could use it and even though I am CPR certified and such, you never know where your brain will go in an emergency - especially when it is your little one you are tending to!

The clip and the checklist are the best parts. Not only would I actually be able to find the pack in an emergency but having the checklist would help me know what to do instead of losing my head. Thanks!

This is great! I love that they look so easy to understand. And it gives me as a mom peace of mind that others know what to do in case of an emergency. I already taped a description of infant cpr to the inside of the cabinets so others would have somewhere to turn -heaven forbit- just in case.

I love the home pack - I'm about to have my first baby and would feel so much more secure having something around that addresses infant emergencies so clearly. Thanks for the chance!

I just had my first baby and I really need this. I love the Combo Pack in the pink/gray. This would put me more at ease.

September 25, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterJessica

I love the clip, so it is always handy. And these are inexpensive enough that you can keep on in your purse, and one in the car, etc.

I like the Home Pack. I am a worry wart, and would feel so much at ease having one of these at home. Thanks for the chance!

September 25, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterNadia

It is great you can clip it to things - very handy so it wont be lost when you need it.

September 25, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterClaire

I also like the home pack because it is really compact.

September 25, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterCher

I love this product comes in travel size and it saves lives. We took a cpr class before my son was born but the details are fuzzy already!
